Welcome to This Journey of Love

  • Welcome to my world!
    I hope you’ll stay.
    Since Father’s love changed me
    I have something to say.
  • The One who loves me,
    See, He also loves you
The things He’s done for me
He will do for you, too.
  • So come with me
    As I follow the Lamb
    Wherever He goes.
    My life’s in His hand.
  • I trust Him and follow Him
    No matter the cost.
Without His great love for me
    I would be lost.
  • The words that you find here
    I hope will breathe life.
    In each day and moment
    You’ll find His delight.
  • For surely His love for you
    Is greater than you know.
    Come with me now
    To His presence we’ll go.
    P.M.D.

Hi, I’m Penney Douglas. I have been married to my precious husband for 36 years. We have been exceedingly and abundantly blessed with 10 children. They all belong to me and my husband. And to think that I was afraid I would never get married! I got a late start (married at 25 and first child at 27), but I guess late bloomers can blossom profusely once they get started.
I blog for several reasons. I like to keep a record of what we’re doing in our homeschooling and share ideas for other homeschoolers or moms who like to work and play with their kids. I try to encourage families to keep Christ first in their homes so they can be all that they were made to be. I want to help others to draw closer to God. I hope to glorify God and give Him praise for all that He does for us.
I am constantly learning, changing and growing. Sometimes I feel like a beginner even though I’ve been a Christian since I was 4 years old and I’ve been homeschooling for about 27 years. And I’ve been living for __ years (long enough!).
But the Lord has been faithful to keep me and my family on an upward climb drawing nearer to Him in spite of our weaknesses and mistakes.
He has led us on a crooked path across the United States and back and then some. (From Ohio to Kansas City to Arizona to Colorado, back to Kansas City to Illinois to Pennsylvania and now to Texas!) We are still looking for that place to call home. We hope to find it before the oldest chicks are ready to fly from the nest! But our desire is that they land somewhere near us even when that time comes.
We are believing God for miracles of provision. We have already seen many. We suffered the loss of our home 19 years ago. Now we live in a different state, and my husband is making more money than ever before. But the money is beside the point. What God did in each of our hearts, convincing us of His reality and His love for us, is worth more than all of the houses or money in the world. But now He has enabled us to help others in need, and we are grateful for the opportunity to bless others.
Our children are truly gifts from God. They learn from us and teach us so much. I would never have known even a fraction of how much God loves me if I had never had the opportunity to be a mother to my precious children. They are teaching me even more as they grow in wisdom and understanding and we share together what the Lord is teaching us.
Family was God’s idea. Marriage was His idea. God has good ideas. His ideas work.
He wants our families to be training grounds for children (and adults) to learn His ways and right ways of relating to God and to people. We learn how to die to ourselves when others are dependent on us, and when we have to learn to get along with the people around us in order to experience peace and harmony. The rough edges are rubbed off as we care enough to be honest with each other and humble ourselves to receive correction even from those younger than ourselves.
God created us because He wanted a family. That’s more than a trite saying. He created us in His image so that He could have sons and daughters that would look like Him, act like Him and love Him. He wanted to be a father.
He created you so He could love you. Receive His love for you. Let Him be your Daddy.

Why should you Celebrate Freedom in your homeschool?

Welcome back to Safe Haven Homeschooling!

https://youtu.be/pEdbBpTsdNI  Here’s the link to the video version of the newsletter.

Hi from Waco, Texas! Now that we’re here we had to go visit the Magnolia Silos. A friend actually invited us, so we looked at the map and saw that it was about 10 minutes away, so we agreed to go.

And yes, I’m sweating in those pictures. It’s HOT in Texas!

And maybe you already knew this, but I didn’t. Waco is the home of the world’s tallest Dr Pepper bottle!

My oldest son, Shawn, and his wife, Brandi, and their friend, Ethan, were with us.

The first thing I noticed was the numbers 10, 2 and 4. We were trying to figure out what they could mean. Shawn noticed that it could mean something about time – the numbers on a clock, but it should be a 6 at the bottom instead of a 4. We found out in the museum that it really was about time. They told people that they should drink Dr. Pepper at 10, 2, and 4 o’clock because those were the times their blood sugar went down! Can you believe that?

They have a museum and gift shop. The best thing about them – they’re air conditioned!

I personally don’t like Dr. Pepper, but Brandi does, so it was a fun little field trip.

Well, the day we’ve all been anxiously awaiting, The 250th Birthday of America, is almost here!

I’m very excited because of the prophetic significance of our nation having a special birthday and our leaders celebrating it by reading the Bible out loud for a week in Washington with our President actually reading 2 Chronicles 7:14. And then a few weeks later our leaders re-dedicated our country to God and again our President read 2 Chronicles 7:14. I believe our country is headed toward amazing times.

On the Fourth of July, we celebrate freedom. And one of my favorite freedoms we have in our country is the freedom to homeschool. Not every country enjoys this freedom. So I’m especially grateful that I live in this country, and I was able to peacefully and confidently homeschool all 10 of my children without fear.

This story sums up how I feel about this sacred freedom that we enjoy here in America.

On the morning of the Fourth of July, the house woke slowly.

Sunlight slipped through the curtains, and somewhere down the street a flag rustled in the breeze. The children padded into the kitchen barefoot, still sleepy, still small enough that the day felt full of promise rather than plans. On the table sat a stack of well-worn books, a spiral notebook, and a box of colored pencils – ordinary things, easily overlooked. Yet today, they felt quietly sacred.

Outside, neighbors were already hanging bunting and stringing lights. Fireworks would come later. Speeches, songs, and history lessons would be shared in town squares and on television. But here, in this home, freedom showed up in quieter ways.

It looked like a mother pouring coffee while listening to a child explain a new idea.

It sounded like laughter breaking out in the middle of a lesson because curiosity had taken a joyful detour.

It felt like the deep peace of knowing that learning could unfold in a way that honored each child’s pace, passions, and personality.

Two hundred and fifty years ago, people risked everything for the idea that families should be free – free to worship, free to speak, free to live according to conscience rather than command. They could not have imagined laptops or library cards, nature journals or kitchen-table classrooms. But they understood something timeless: that freedom thrives best when it is lived out in homes.

Homeschooling, in its simplest form, is an act of gratitude. It is saying, We recognize this gift, and we will steward it well. It is choosing to shape our days intentionally, to pass on not just information, but values – faith, responsibility, compassion, courage. It is teaching children that liberty is not loud or reckless, but thoughtful and rooted in love.

As the day unfolds, the children will help bake pies and watch parades. They will hear stories of courage and sacrifice. They will hold sparklers at dusk, their faces glowing as tiny stars fizz into the summer air. And woven through it all will be an unspoken understanding: that the freedom they are celebrating is the same freedom that allows them to learn at this table, in this home, with these people.

Tonight, when the fireworks burst overhead, their colors will fade quickly. But the freedom to raise our children, to educate them according to our convictions, and to shape a family culture of faith and gratitude – that endures.

Two hundred and fifty years in, America’s story is still being written. It is written in classrooms and courtrooms, yes – but also in living rooms, on back porches, and around kitchen tables. It is written every time a parent chooses presence over pressure, curiosity over conformity, and gratitude over fear.

And on this Fourth of July, as flags wave and songs are sung, we give thanks – not only for a nation born in courage, but for the quiet, daily freedom to raise our children in love.

That is a liberty worth celebrating.

Look at it on Teachers Pay Teachers to see how huge it is. Jump on this right away and start planning the best 4th of July party you’ve ever had! This year is a very special year, so commemorate it with a great celebration.

One thing I want to do to celebrate the 4th of July, America’s birthday, and our freedom is to go watch Young Washington at the theater. It’s in theaters starting July 3.

From the website:

“Before he was the Father of a Nation, he was a soldier fighting to survive. A single misstep thrusts young George Washington into the center of a global conflict, testing his honor, loyalty, and courage. As alliances crumble and the frontier erupts into war, he must confront not only his enemies but the man he’s becoming. This is the untold story of Young Washington.”

Here’s the website where you can find showtimes.

Here’s your recipe for the 4th of July!

4th of July Fruit Kabobs

Ingredients

– 2 watermelons
– 1 (10.5 ounce) package fresh blueberries
– wooden skewers

Directions

  1. Slice watermelon in thick slices. Cut out stars using a cookie cutter.
  2. Skewer about 15 blueberries on a wooden skewer and 1 watermelon star on top. Repeat with remaining ingredients.

Older kids can help with the assembly. Don’t cut the watermelon too thinly, otherwise the stars will break when you are trying to skewer them.

Serve with a side of yogurt or cream cheese dip to really stick with the red, white, and blue theme.

Cream cheese dip

  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Beat cream cheese in a stand mixer until whipped; add brown sugar and vanilla. Continue beating until dip is well mixed.*You can use another kind of sugar if you prefer.

American Symbols Pattern Block Mats – These mats have patterns for American eagle, Statue of Liberty and American flag – great idea!

I discovered a lady named Alison Herron on an interview HERE.

She talked about neuroplasticity. And she has this teaching on her website.

“Did you know that your brain can “re-wire” itself? It’s called “neuroplasticity,” and it opens up exciting possibilities for healing from chronic anxiety, illness, pain, and fear. These issues sometimes arise when the limbic system gets stuck in a fight-flight-freeze-or-fawn response as the result of trauma or prolonged stress. (The “fawn” response refers to becoming an excessive people-pleaser, as though appeasing others, even at the expense of our own well-being, will somehow keep us safe.)

Once a brain becomes trapped in a state of hyper-vigilance or dysregulation, it can be very difficult to reverse, and medical interventions often fall short. And, cute web graphics notwithstanding, there’s nothing cute or funny about being stuck in this situation. It may contribute to existing anxiety, which in turn can contribute to difficulty functioning at home, at work, or in relationships. It may also cause sleep issues, illness and/or chronic pain, and destructive negative behaviors.

The issue is not that the nervous system isn’t functioning – it’s just functioning inappropriately, because its natural ebb and flow are not being properly regulated. Once a brain becomes trapped in a state of hyper-vigilance – a form of traumatic brain injury – it can be very difficult to reverse. (Learn more about this dysregulation and its causes and effects at Trauma and the Nervous System: A Polyvagal Perspective.)

You may believe that engaging in more fervent and faithful prayer, scripture study, obedience, and selfless service will fix things. And, sometimes, it does. But if it doesn’t, where does that leave you as a Christian? Wondering why God isn’t answering your prayers can be salt in the already-deep wounds of your ongoing distress. If this sounds familiar – whether in your own life, or the life of someone you love – please understand that it is not your fault, not permanent, and not God’s will for anyone’s life.

How Neuroplasticity Can Help

Our brains are malleable (plastic) and can be “rewired” to create lasting feelings of safety and peace, as well as physical healing… no matter our age or the duration of our suffering. The healing emotions and chemicals produced during this process have remarkable, scientifically-proven effects which facilitate the capacity for wholeness God created in us all. Principles of neuroplasticity– also known as limbic system rewiring, or brain rewiring – when purposefully applied in harmony with the teachings of Jesus Christ, empower us to turn fear into peace, despair into joy, and illness into health.

Our ever-expanding library of songs has been created with this miraculous gift of self-directed healing in mind. Think of it as your home for Christ-centered MUSICAL brain rewiring! That said, we understand that the concepts of neuroplasticity and brain rewiring are unfamiliar to many people. So, we have included a lot of additional information on this website to help explain what it is, how it works, who it can benefit, how to get started, and what to expect.”

There’s so much good stuff here! I’ve been doing the songs in the playlist every day, and I’m memorizing the words and the dance moves. It’s fun, and the words are very life-giving and restorative, making my thoughts and emotions come into a place of peace and joy. I’m only on Section B, Level 2, but I’m not going to move on until I can do them perfectly. But I know this is really good for me, and I’m really enjoying it!

Creating lessons they’ll enjoy!

Creating engaging lessons for your homeschool children does not have to mean fancy materials or a packed schedule.

It often starts with simply paying attention to your child.

What do they notice? What makes them light up? What helps them stay focused? What makes them want to keep going?

One child may learn best while moving. Another may need to see it written out. Another may love to hear it read aloud. Another may understand best when they can touch it, build it, sort it, or draw it.

When we work with the way our children are made, learning becomes much more pleasant. And often much more effective.

So if a lesson is not connecting, do not assume your child cannot learn it. Try a different approach.

Let them:

  • move while they memorize
  • build while they count
  • draw while they narrate
  • listen while they color
  • act it out
  • use real objects
  • explore it in a hands-on way

Sometimes the lesson becomes engaging not because the subject changed, but because the method did.

Take stock of your child. Try a few different ways. Watch what works.

You may be surprised at how much more your child remembers when learning feels like it fits them.

Start the Day with Prayer in Your Homeschool

Start the Day with Prayer in Your Homeschool

When you homeschool, the day can begin before you are really ready.

The children wake up.

Someone is hungry.

Someone else cannot find something.

There is a mess somewhere.

The lesson plans are waiting.

The laundry is waiting too.

And before you know it, your whole day can feel like it is pulling you in a dozen directions at once.

That is why prayer at the beginning of the day is so important.

Before we start teaching, before we start correcting, before we start trying to get everybody moving in the right direction, we need to stop and ask the Lord for help.

We need His guidance.

We need His peace.

We need His wisdom.

We need His love.

We cannot do this well in our own strength.

We need the Holy Spirit to show us what to do and what to say.

We need Him to help us know what to teach, when to teach it, and how to teach it in a way that reaches our children.

Sometimes we think we already know what the day should look like.

But then the child is not ready.

Or the lesson is not working.

Or there is a deeper need that is more important than the worksheet sitting on the table.

That is when prayer helps us slow down and listen.

The Holy Spirit knows what each child needs.

He knows what will bring peace into the home.

He knows when to press forward and when to back off.

He knows when to correct and when to comfort.

He knows when a child needs instruction and when a child needs a hug.

He knows what is happening in our children’s hearts, even when we do not.

If we begin the day by asking Him to lead us, we are inviting Him into our homeschool.

We are saying, “Lord, this is Yours. Help me parent well. Help me teach well. Help me speak with kindness. Help me stay calm. Help me notice what matters most.”

That kind of prayer changes the atmosphere of the home.

It reminds us that homeschool is not just about getting through school work.

It is about discipling our children.

It is about loving them.

It is about training them.

It is about creating an environment where learning can happen without fear and where grace is present even when things are imperfect.

When we pray for peace in the home, we are asking the Lord to guard our hearts and our children’s hearts.

We are asking Him to settle the tension.

We are asking Him to help us respond instead of react.

We are asking Him to give us patience when the same issue comes up again.

We are asking Him to keep our words gentle.

We are asking Him to help us not speak in frustration when we should be speaking in love.

And we really do need that help.

Because children are watching us.

They are listening to us.

They learn from the way we handle stress.

They learn from the way we talk when we are tired.

They learn from the way we answer when they ask the same question for the fifth time.

If we want our children to learn love, peace, kindness, patience, and self-control, then we need to ask the Holy Spirit to produce those things in us first.

That is one of the beautiful things about homeschooling.

The Lord is not just teaching the children.

He is also working on us.

He is shaping our character too.

So before the day gets too busy, stop and pray.

Ask the Lord to guide you.

Ask Him to show you what to do.

Ask Him to help you know what to teach and how to teach it.

Ask Him to fill your home with peace.

Ask Him to help you speak and act in love.

And then go into the day expecting Him to answer.

Not because you have everything figured out.

But because He does.

Prayer to Start Your Homeschool Day

Lord, thank You for this new day.

Please guide me by Your Holy Spirit in everything I do.

Show me what to teach, when to teach it, and how to teach it well.

Give me wisdom to know what my children need today.

Fill our home with Your peace.

Help me to speak gently, act in love, and respond with patience.

Keep me from frustration and help me walk in grace.

Let my children see Your love in me.

In JeAmen.

Action Steps

  1. Begin your day with prayer before school starts.
  2. Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance about what to teach and how to teach it.
  3. Pray for peace over your home and your children.
  4. Ask for wisdom to speak and act in love all day long.
  5. Keep a short prayer written somewhere visible to remind you to pause and pray.

Helping Your Homeschool Children Become Entrepreneurs

Helping Your Homeschool Children Become Entrepreneurs

As homeschool moms, we have a beautiful opportunity.

We get to do more than teach our children reading, writing, and math. We get to help them discover how God made them. We get to nurture their gifts, strengthen their confidence, and expose them to ideas that may one day grow into a business, a calling, or even a lifelong career.

Some children are natural builders. Some love to organize. Some are creative. Some are good with people. Some are problem solvers. Some notice needs that other people overlook.

That means entrepreneurship does not have to start with a formal business plan or a big investment.

It can start much smaller than that.

It can start with observation.

It can start with interest.

It can start with letting your child try things, serve people, learn from others, and discover what they enjoy doing.

Expose Them to Different Kinds of Businesses

One of the best things we can do is simply let our children see how different businesses work.

Take them with you when you can. Talk about what people do for a living. Point out business owners in your community. Let them notice that not all work looks the same.

Some businesses are hands-on and practical.

Some are creative.

Some are online.

Some involve helping people.

Some involve making things.

Some involve fixing things.

Some involve teaching, organizing, designing, writing, cooking, cleaning, caring, or selling.

You might expose your children to businesses like:

  • Baking and cake decorating
  • Lawn care or landscaping
  • Pet sitting or dog walking
  • Babysitting or childcare
  • Photography
  • Cleaning services
  • Sewing or alterations
  • Baking and selling homemade goods
  • Tutoring younger children
  • Crafting and handmade products
  • Car detailing
  • Flower arranging
  • Bookkeeping or office help
  • Social media help
  • Web design
  • Printing or custom shirts
  • Home organizing
  • Lawn and garden work
  • Repair and handyman work

The point is not that your child must do one of these exact things.

The point is to help them see possibilities.

As they observe different businesses, they may suddenly say, “I could do that,” or “I would like to try that,” or “I never thought about that before.”

That is a good place to begin.

Start with Their Interests and Strengths

A child who loves animals may do well in pet care.

A child who loves babies may enjoy childcare.

A child who likes art may be interested in handmade products or design.

A child who likes to talk may do well in customer service or sales.

A child who likes organizing may enjoy office tasks, planning, or helping with inventory.

A child who loves to build may be interested in tools, repairs, or woodworking.

A child who loves to write may enjoy editing, blogging, or social media.

A child who likes numbers may enjoy bookkeeping or budgeting.

We should pay attention to what delights them.

Not every child will become an entrepreneur.

But many children can benefit from learning to think like one.

They can learn to notice needs.

They can learn to solve problems.

They can learn to serve people well.

They can learn that work has value.

And they can learn that they do not have to wait until adulthood to start developing useful skills.

Apprenticeship and Internship Matter

One of the best ways to learn is by watching someone else do it.

That is where apprenticeship and internship come in.

A child can learn so much by spending time with someone who already knows how to do a job or run a business.

They can observe how things are done.

They can ask questions.

They can practice skills in a real setting.

They can see what it looks like to serve customers, handle responsibility, solve problems, and work with excellence.

An apprenticeship may be informal.

It may be a family friend, a neighbor, a small business owner, or a relative who is willing to teach a child some skills.

An internship may be more structured.

It may be for an older teen who wants to learn more about a field and gain real-life experience.

You could ask questions like:

  • What kind of work do you enjoy?
  • Who do you know that does that kind of work?
  • Is there someone we could ask to let you shadow them?
  • Could you help for a few hours and learn by observing?
  • What skills would you need to be helpful in that setting?

This does not have to be fancy.

It just needs to be real.

Business Skills Children Can Learn in Homeschool

Entrepreneurship is not only about selling something.

It is also about learning how to think, plan, communicate, and follow through.

There are many business skills children can begin learning at home.

Here are some good ones:

1. Communication

Children need to learn how to speak clearly, listen well, and communicate respectfully.

They can practice this by:

  • making phone calls
  • introducing themselves
  • speaking to adults
  • writing emails
  • answering questions politely
  • describing what they are offering

2. Money Skills

They should learn how money works.

They can practice:

  • counting money
  • making change
  • budgeting
  • saving
  • tracking income and expenses
  • setting prices
  • understanding profit

3. Responsibility

A business owner has to follow through.

Children can learn responsibility by:

  • completing chores
  • keeping a schedule
  • showing up on time
  • finishing assignments
  • taking care of tools and materials
  • being dependable

4. Organization

They need to know how to keep track of things.

They can practice:

  • sorting supplies
  • labeling items
  • keeping records
  • making lists
  • planning steps
  • organizing orders

5. Problem Solving

Things go wrong in business.

That is part of life.

Children can learn how to think through problems by asking:

  • What is the issue?
  • What are the choices?
  • What is the best next step?
  • How can I fix it?
  • What can I learn from this?

6. Customer Service

This is a big one.

They need to learn how to treat people well.

They can practice:

  • being polite
  • answering questions kindly
  • serving others
  • taking feedback without getting upset
  • making things right when needed

7. Work Ethic

This is one of the most important things we can teach.

Children learn work ethic by doing real work.

They learn that:

  • effort matters
  • quality matters
  • honesty matters
  • consistency matters
  • excellence matters

Ways to Practice Entrepreneurship at Home

You do not have to wait until your children are older to begin.

You can start in simple ways.

  • Let them set up a lemonade stand
  • Help them make baked goods to sell
  • Have them make crafts for a small market
  • Let them organize a neighborhood service project
  • Encourage them to pet sit for a family friend
  • Help them offer yard work or cleaning help
  • Let them sell something they made
  • Help them create flyers or a simple ad
  • Have them practice taking orders
  • Show them how to track costs and profit

These little experiences teach so much.

They give children confidence.

They teach them how to interact with people.

They help them see that their work can bless others.

Homeschool is a Great Place to Build Business Skills

One of the advantages of homeschooling is that we are not limited to just book learning.

We can weave life skills into everyday learning.

We can teach math through real money.

We can teach writing through emails and advertisements.

We can teach reading through instructions and research.

We can teach speaking through presentations and conversations.

We can teach planning through projects.

We can teach independence through responsibility.

We can teach our children how to learn, how to work, and how to think.

That is a wonderful foundation for entrepreneurship.

Encourage, Don’t Pressure

Not every child will want to start a business.

And that is okay.

Our job is not to force a path.

Our job is to observe, encourage, and help them explore.

Some children will try several things before they find what fits.

Some will know right away.

Some will need time.

Some will need a lot of help.

Some will need a little push and then they will run with it.

We should not compare them to one another.

We should not decide too quickly what they are or are not capable of.

We should help them grow in the direction God has gifted them.

Final Thoughts

If you want to raise entrepreneurial children, start by exposing them to possibilities.

Let them see different businesses.

Let them meet people who do different kinds of work.

Let them learn real skills.

Let them try things.

Let them watch.

Let them help.

Let them practice.

And as they grow, they may discover not only how to earn money, but how to serve others, use their gifts, and build something meaningful.

That is a beautiful thing to help a child do.

Action Steps

  1. Make a list of businesses in your community that your children could observe or learn from.
  2. Talk with your children about what kinds of work interest them.
  3. Look for a possible apprenticeship or internship opportunity.
  4. Choose 2 or 3 business skills to teach in your homeschool this month.
  5. Let your children practice one real-life money or business activity.

Encouraging Entrepreneurship in Homeschooling

Penney read her June newsletter to the Safe Haven family, covering several topics including her family’s move to Texas and being closer to grandchildren.

The main focus was on “Raising Young Entrepreneurs in Your Homeschool,” discussing how homeschool families can nurture entrepreneurial skills through creativity, courage, and simple opportunities.

Penney outlined four simple ways to start at home including maker markets, service-based ideas, digital creativity, and family brainstorm nights.

She also announced a new Facebook group called “Homeschooling Can Be Fun,” mentioned her coaching program for homeschool moms, and offered tutoring services for elementary through fifth grade.

The newsletter included a health tip about DMSO and featured 4th of July products including workbook activities about Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” and American history.
