Getting Back in Harmony – Safe Haven News September

I’m so glad to see you again!

Last month, I told you that I would tell you a story about how God surprised me when I was feeling like homeschooling was not really going the way it should.

And how He used a tiny caterpillar to change the atmosphere in our home.

Here it is:

A Blessed Birthday Surprise

I remember a time when I felt like my kids were all drifting—not just from each other, but from me, too. Even though we were home together every day, it felt like we were living separate lives. Everyone was doing their own thing, and we hardly spent any time truly together.

Homeschooling had always been about learning side by side, growing as a family. But somewhere along the way, that togetherness seemed to fade. My heart ached for connection.

So on my birthday, I asked for just one thing: I wanted all ten of my kids to go on a walk with me. Just a simple walk along the trail behind our neighborhood. That was it.

Now, you have to understand—my kids are strong-willed and fiercely independent. If they already had something in mind, convincing them to change course wasn’t easy. But when I told them that was all I wanted for my birthday, they (reluctantly) paused their video games and other distractions, put on their shoes—no small task!—and joined me.

As we walked down the street, I realized we probably looked like a small parade. Not that anyone was around to see it—but it made me smile.

The trail led us past the flooded woods, typical of that part of Illinois. These woods were more like swamps, not the kind I loved to explore. Still, we took it in. Patrick said he’d gone back there before, but it was a little spooky.

We all began noticing the beauty around us—wildflowers, buzzing insects, tall grasses swaying in the breeze. I love nature, and I’ve passed that love on to my children, so this became an impromptu nature walk. My soul felt full again. It had been too long since we’d all done something like this. Just being together. I was so happy.

Then I noticed some plants that reminded me of milkweed—the kind I remembered from Ohio, where they were thick and plain. These were different: slender stalks, delicate pink blossoms. But something in me knew—they had to be a kind of milkweed.

I paid attention because years ago I had raised Monarch caterpillars, feeding them milkweed leaves. My daughter Katie noticed the plants too and picked a few to take home. She pointed out a tiny caterpillar clinging to one of the leaves. I was mildly curious—until we got home.

When I looked closer, I realized—it was a Monarch caterpillar.

Excitement bubbled up. I placed the plant in a jar, and sure enough, the little guy started munching away. Soon we needed more leaves, so Patrick went back to the swampy trail and brought more. The caterpillar grew quickly, gaining bold black, white, and yellow stripes. He was beautiful—and definitely a Monarch.

We started researching again—how long until a chrysalis? How long inside before the butterfly emerged? It had been years since I’d done this.

We learned it would take about two weeks for the caterpillar to form its chrysalis, and another two weeks until it became a butterfly.

All the kids were suddenly invested. They checked on him daily, made sure he had fresh milkweed, and tracked his progress. This little caterpillar became our family pet. When he finally formed his chrysalis, everyone celebrated. We couldn’t wait for the butterfly to emerge.

That tiny caterpillar brought us all together again. It became a shared family project that filled our home with wonder and joy.

And I knew—it was no accident.

God had given me a special surprise for my birthday. He heard the quiet cry of my heart and answered it in the sweetest, most unexpected way. He didn’t just bring us together for one walk—He gave us something beautiful to share for weeks afterward.

Sometimes life feels stale. Ordinary. Disconnected. We can feel disappointed or discouraged—especially when things don’t go the way we hoped.

But God is always good.

He never leaves us—not even in the quiet, messy, weary seasons. And sometimes, He sends a little surprise—just to remind us how deeply we’re loved.

So if your heart feels heavy today, tell Him. He’s listening.

And keep your eyes open. Look for the small signs of His love—like a caterpillar on a milkweed leaf.

You never know how He might bring joy back into your life.

If you let Him.

If you are a nature nerd like me, and this story whetted your appetite for raising caterpillars, check out Caterpillar Chronicles on my blog. Here’s the first post in the series, but click on the Category called Caterpillar Chronicles to follow our adventures and my research on raising caterpillars.

Here’s a devotional journal page to go with this story about looking for God’s blessings in the ordinary and trusting Him with the cry of your heart. And here’s another devotional page that’s more colorful.

My Latest Project

🔥I shared an interview last month that I did on Blossoms of My Life Radio Show. It was about the journey of fire my family endured which I wrote about in my book, Refined By Fire. If you didn’t hear that interview, hit reply and ask me for the link, and I’ll send it right to you.🔥

📚Well, Ramona interviewed me again after that, and we talked about homeschooling.📚

I mostly talked about how to get started homeschooling for those who might be interested. But if you know someone who might benefit from hearing it, please pass it on to them. Here’s the link (this also includes the transcript).

You can also hear it on Spotify HERE. Encourage those who are thinking about it to go ahead and take the plunge and see how wonderful homeschooling can be!

A Crafty Bible Study for Mother Culture

Hey, Have you ever wanted to learn how to do pretty lettering and coloring and Bible journaling?

JoDitt Williams is a graphic designer who has a community for women who love to do Bible journaling, coloring, lettering, and lots of creative activities. Her community on Skool is called Fruitful Creativity with JoDitt. I just joined a couple months ago, and I have learned so much from her already.

I made this for my word of the year:

If you have ever thought you’d like to learn how to do lettering or coloring techniques or Bible journaling, this community would be the perfect way to learn with lots of other Christian women who love the Lord and love reading the Bible.

There is a new theme every month that JoDitt gives assignments for us to work on and she gives teachings and examples that help us to dive into the Bible and find out what God is saying to us each month.

JoDitt homeschooled her children and is a strong Christian who loves the Bible and family and creating. You’ll love her!

You can see her books on Amazon.

Curriculum Idea

If you have a first grader, and you haven’t found a curriculum that you love yet, check out this First Grade Curriculum Guide and Weekly Review.

As a former first grade teacher and having homeschooled all 10 of my kids in first grade, I felt pretty qualified to put this curriculum guide together.

The way it works is this:
1. You look at the guide before the week begins. You get the suggested books from the library or order them. There are Amazon links for your convenience.
2. You read the books to your child during the week. Some weeks have suggested books for Science and Social Studies. Some weeks don’t have as many. You can obviously choose your own books. These are just suggestions.
3. Then at the end of the week, probably Friday, you have your child do the review sheet for the week.

The review sheets contain simple questions and problems from the reading you did during the week. Plus simple Language Arts and Math.

You are expected to have a phonics and reading program that’s separate from this. And a Math program. This was primarily set up as a quick review of what they learned at the end of each week.

Each review page covers 6 subjects: Language Arts, Copywork, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Art. Just one square for each subject.

Check it out here and see if this is the curriculum guide you’ve been looking for!

Health tip for this month: Avoid fluoride. Choose Xylitol instead for your toothpaste.

Here are just a few of the numerous health benefits of xylitol

• Looks, tastes and behaves like sugar and is totally interchangeable
• Suitable for diabetics due to low glycemic index
• Antibacterial, antiviral for protecting against and fighting infections
• Antifungal, fighting candida, yeast and other fungal infections
• Alkalizing, thereby helping to maintain the body at a healthy alkaline pH
• Probiotic and therefore feeds “good microbes” to strengthen the immune system
• Anti-pathogenic microbial, killing bad microbes that weaken the immune system
• Stabilizes insulin and hormone levels in harmony with the endocrine system
• Reduces craving for food and calories, thereby assisting weight loss
• Beneficial for helping sinus, ear and nose infections

Xylitol looks, tastes and behaves like sugar without all the harmful health consequences while being extremely beneficial for general health.

From Natural News

For adults, xylitol can help reduce plaque and bacteria, strengthen tooth enamel, prevent cavities, and promote fresh breath. It is especially beneficial for those with dry mouth, as it stimulates saliva production.
Here’s the article

This toothpaste called Himalaya Botanique looks like a good fluoride-free toothpaste. It contains xylitol, pomegranate, neem and triphala. It also seems a little more affordable than others I looked at.

If you also want to remineralize your teeth, you could try this toothpaste which also contains xylitol:
Himalaya Botanique Whitening + Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste, Mint Flavor – Nano Hydroxyapatite to Support Remineralization and Restore Enamel

A chewing gum which contains xylitol called Spry actually works to prevent cavities as you’re chewing it. Spry also has mints that contain xylitol. They increase saliva production, stop bad breath, and may also help fight off cavities.
From Natural News article.

I’ve been chewing a gum called pür gum. I got the spearmint flavor on Amazon. I like it. I haven’t chewed gum in a long time, but I thought I would try it to see what xylitol does for me. I just got it, so I’ll let you know later what I observe.

An important fact to know about xylitol is that it is toxic to dogs. Make sure you keep any product with xylitol up where your pets can’t get to it.

Also I read an article that said they didn’t recommend using it as a sweetener substitute because it causes diarrhea.

But it seems to be a good solution for toothpaste and gum and mints.

Join us next month when we will talk about Faith Over Fear in Homeschooling!

If there’s anything I can help you with, just reach out to me. I can help with curriculum choices or problems. Or I can help you find solutions to problems that might be coming up as you try to homeschool, take care of babies and toddlers, cook and clean the house, and the million other things you have to do. I’ve been there. I know you can do this! And I would be honored to come alongside you with encouragement and solutions.

They Risked Jail to Homeschool Their Children – Safe Haven News August

It’s good to see you again!

This month I wanted to continue with our theme of FREEDOM by talking about a few of the brave people who paved the way for us to have that precious homeschool FREEDOM we enjoy today.

🏛️ They Risked It All: The Homeschool Pioneers Who Faced Jail for Their Beliefs

By Penney Douglas

Homeschooling is legal across the United States today—but that wasn’t always the case.

In the 1970s and 1980s, families who chose to educate their children at home were often treated like criminals. In many states, it was considered educational neglect or truancy. Brave parents were taken to court, threatened with jail time, and even told they could lose custody of their children.

This is the story of the homeschool pioneers who stood firm in their convictions and fought for the freedom we now enjoy.

👩‍⚖️ Zan Tyler — Facing Jail in South Carolina

“We were told we could go to jail for 30 days for every day our child wasn’t in school.”

In 1984, Zan Tyler and her husband Joe began homeschooling their son in Columbia, South Carolina. The state superintendent told Zan that she could be jailed for exercising her parental right to homeschool.

But the Tylers did not back down. They went to court, endured opposition from the school board and legal system, and held on to their convictions. Their battle helped pave the way for the eventual legalization of homeschooling in South Carolina. Today, Zan Tyler is a beloved author, speaker, and advocate, but her journey began with civil courage and a deep trust in God’s call on her life.

⚖️ Michael Farris — The Attorney Who Defended a Movement

“Some parents hid their children during the day so the truant officer wouldn’t find them.”

Michael Farris, a constitutional lawyer and homeschooling father, founded the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) in 1983. At the time, homeschooling was either illegal or severely restricted in most states.

He stepped in to defend families being threatened with imprisonment, fines, and the removal of their children. He recounts numerous cases where parents were forced to teach in secret, draw the curtains, and fear the knock at the door. Farris’ legal work and advocacy helped change the landscape of homeschooling nationwide.

🏚️ The Toma Family — Threatened with Losing Their Children

In Michigan, the Toma family was among many who faced intense pressure from the authorities. They were told their children would be removed from the home if they didn’t enroll them in public school.

The family stood firm in their beliefs, refusing to comply. Legal threats turned into a court battle—but they weren’t alone. With the support of HSLDA and other homeschoolers rallying around them, they helped bring about legal recognition for homeschoolers in Michigan. Their story was one of many that led to a key Michigan Supreme Court decision affirming homeschool rights.

🚔 The McDowells — Convicted in North Dakota

In the 1980s, North Dakota required homeschool parents to be certified teachers. Mark and Debbie McDowell were not certified—but they believed it was their God-given right to teach their children at home.

When they refused to comply, they were charged with truancy and convicted. Their story went public and helped catalyze reform. The McDowells’ bold stand became part of the larger fight for parental rights and educational freedom in one of the last states to legalize homeschooling.

🙏 Their Legacy, Our Freedom

These were ordinary families with extraordinary courage. They weren’t trying to start a movement—they were simply following their convictions and doing what they believed was best for their children.

Because of their bravery, we now enjoy the freedom to homeschool without fear. But we must remember that freedom is never free—it is preserved by those willing to stand up and speak out, no matter the cost.

“If we don’t remember the fight, we may not appreciate the freedom.”

✍️ Reflection Prompt for Readers:

Do you take your homeschool freedom for granted? What would you be willing to risk for your children’s future?

🔥 I got to do an interview on a radio show about the Journey of Fire my family went through.

You can read all about it in my book Refined By Fire.

But here’s a brand new take on the story recorded just last month.

✝️ Here are some verses that helped me through our Journey of Fire.
They kept me from losing my faith!

This months’ Health tip: Send your kids out to pick those dandelions in your yard! And have them make sure to get some roots. Did you know that dandelion tea has all kinds of health benefits?

1. It reduces water weightIf you’re feeling bloated, dandelion tea could provide relief because it acts as a diuretic and increases urine output. One study showed an increased urine output after two 1-cup servings of dandelion tea made from the leaves of the plant.

2. It could promote liver healthDandelion root has long been held as a “liver tonic” in folk medicine. Preliminary studies suggest this is due, in part, to its ability to increase the flow of bile.

Naturopaths believe it means that dandelion root tea could help detoxify the liver, help with skin and eye problems, and relieve symptoms of liver disease. A 2017 study suggests that polysaccharides in dandelion may indeed be beneficial to liver function.

3. It can act as a natural coffee substituteYou may be able to find this product of pre-prepared dandelion root at your local health food stores, but you can also harvest and make it from your own non-insecticide-treated, lawn-variety dandelions.

The roots of young dandelion plants are roasted to a dark brown color. Then, after steeping in hot water and straining, it can be enjoyed as a coffee substitute.

4. Similarities between dandelion and a weight loss drug?A recent Korean study suggests that dandelion could have similar effects on the body as the weight loss drug Orlistat, which works by inhibiting pancreatic lipase, an enzyme released during digestion to break down fat.

Testing the impact of dandelion extract in mice revealed similar results, prompting researchers to recommend further study on the possible anti-obesity effects of dandelion.

5. Dandelion tea may soothe digestive ailmentsDandelion root tea can have many positive effects on your digestive system, although much of the evidence is anecdotal. It has historically been used to improve appetite, soothe minor digestive ailments, and possibly relieve constipation.

6. It could have future anti-cancer applicationsRecently, dandelion root has been studied for its cancer-fighting potential, and so far the results appear promising.

A 2011 Canadian study showed that dandelion root extract induces cell death in melanoma cells without impacting non-cancerous cells. Another showed that it does the same to pancreatic cancer cells.

While the anti-cancer effects of dandelion tea haven’t been tested, the potential is positive.

7. It may help prevent urinary tract infectionsPaired with another herb, uva ursi, dandelion roots and leaves may help prevent urinary tract infections. It’s believed this combination works because of anti-bacterial compounds in uva ursi, and the increased urination associated with dandelion.

If you don’t have your own dandelions or your lawn has been treated with chemicals, there are dandelion teas you can buy in a health store, Walmart or Amazon. It’s everywhere!

And if you read the article I referred to, it tells you how to make your own tea with your own dandelions.

Make sure you read next month’s newsletter when I’ll tell you a story about how God surprised me when I was feeling like homeschooling was not really going the way it should.

My New Book: Dear Struggling Homeschool Mom, I See You!

My new book is coming out Dec. 22!!!

I’ve been working on this book for 3 years!

I started writing it for my friend who was struggling with figuring out how to make homeschool enjoyable and how to make it fit her family. I had mentored her for a few years. She had read my previous books. Her husband read them with her!
She discovered that she needed to renew her mind and develop a homeschool mindset instead of thinking like public schools had trained her to think.
After she had found her footing, I decided to write a book based on the things that I helped her with.
So this book is full of practical advice about many of the issues that homeschoolers face in life.
Here are some things that readers have said about the book:
I homeschooled six children for 25 years and have been speaking to homeschoolers on my podcast and in person for over a decade. I have read piles of books on homeschooling and have interviewed dozens of homeschool leaders. So I wasn’t prepared for my reaction to this little book by Penney Douglas: I cried. Even as a retired homeschool mother, I felt encouraged and uplifted. This short book will make you feel as though you are sitting with a wise, compassionate mentor. You will treasure Penney’s sweet words and practical advice as you continue in the blessed calling of homeschool motherhood.

“Dear Struggling Homeschool Mom, I See You” is like a warm hug wrapped in practical wisdom.
As a homeschool mom, I’ve read many books, but this one is refreshingly real—straight to the point, filled with godly encouragement, and deeply practical for everyday life. Penney Douglas not only equips us with strategies for teaching and home management but also speaks to the heart, reminding us to nourish our marriages and lead our children toward Christ.
What I loved most is how this short guide gently lifts the heavy burden of fear and worry that so many new homeschool parents carry. With grace and honesty, it replaces unrealistic expectations with hope, joy, and simple, actionable steps. It’s a book to keep close by—and perfect for gifting homeschool moms who need to know they are seen, loved, and not alone.

They Call Me Blessed, The Homeschool Sisterhood, and Hebrew for Homeschoolers. Co-host of the Charlotte Mason Online Conference and For Such a Time as This Online Summit
Dear Struggling Homeschool Mom, I See You is a breath of fresh air for every weary mama who wonders if she’s enough. Penney Douglas reminds us that we can’t, and shouldn’t, do it all. She gives us permission to rest, to let go of perfection, and to focus on what truly matters.
I especially appreciated the practical checklists throughout the book. They aren’t overwhelming, but instead give simple, actionable steps that help bring peace back into the homeschool day.
Most of all, I was struck by her honesty about prayer. When she shared that the real problem in her home was prayerlessness, I felt that conviction in my own heart. What a powerful reminder to return to the Source of strength.
This is a book that will both comfort and challenge you. It’s like a gentle friend reminding you to breathe, to take it one day at a time, and to remember that God delights in you right where you are.
—Dachelle McVey, Homeschool Mom & Founder of Literary Adventures for Kids

The book will be available on Amazon on Dec. 22. Make sure you get a copy for the homeschool mom in your life. Or the future homeschool moms! It makes a great Christmas gift!

When Your Kids Go Astray

When your kids go astray no matter how hard you pray

“It’s even harder when your kids are older.” I heard this over and over again as I was wrangling my 4, then 5, then 6 kids who were 10 years old and younger into some semblance of order. I refused to believe that. Nothing could be harder than this!

But I was wrong. The little ones took a lot of energy and patience, for sure. But these older kids… Well, they seem to take full advantage of their free will when they reach the legal age, and some start even sooner.

We teach them the ways of God, we pray for them and with them, we do our best to lead them to Jesus. And how do they thank us? They go out and try everything you told them to avoid. Why do they do that?

I know that some kids make it through without being tempted by the things of the world. I certainly did. But that didn’t mean I didn’t have lots of issues inside. I had lots of jealousy, pride, and arrogance that I hid in my heart.

But the ones who go out and do things that cause shame and sadness in our mama hearts, why do they do that?
I think that some of it is just their own personality, or decisions that they make in their hearts. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink, and you can lead your kids to truth, but you can’t make them think!
But I also believe there’s a bigger problem here. I believe that the enemy is trying to steal our seed. The Lord gives us godly seed to keep His story being told. But they are being led astray and taken captive by the enemy of our souls.
He brings the wrong people their way. He plants thoughts in their minds. He twists their thinking so that they misconstrue things that people say and events that happen. He takes advantage of their immaturity and naivete.
When this first started happening to my kids after they got jobs, I was distraught. I wondered what I did wrong, what I could have done differently. I was very hurt and confused by the way they were acting. I felt guilty for what they were doing. It felt like it was my fault for not teaching them better. I thought I must not have explained things to them, things that they needed to know.
Some of that may be true. But I kept praying about it and asking the Lord what I should do. One day when I was crying out to Him about it, He gently reassured me that I had dedicated them to Him as children. And I taught them the ways of the Lord. I led each one of them to accept Jesus. I loved them, took care of them, and helped them the best that I could. And I set up barriers to keep them from sinful ways. It wasn’t my fault that some of them were choosing to run roughshod over those barriers into all kinds of trouble.
I felt better after that. A big part of the burden was lifted off of me. I had some friends who were having similar struggles with their grown kids. I tried to encourage them with what the Lord told me.
This era is a very difficult time to raise godly children. So much sin is right out in the open. It’s easily accessible on the internet, on TV, on magazine covers, on the radio, and almost everywhere you go in public. The standards of society have declined so much that almost anything goes. The morals of the younger generation are almost non-existent.
But I still have hope for our children. I have hope for those who have been raised up in godly homes. I believe the verses in the Bible that say, “If you train up a child in the way he should go, when he is old, he will not depart from it,” and “Our children are taught of the Lord and great is the peace of our children.” My husband and I declare these verses over our children every night. And we also declare that they will fulfill their prophetic destinies.
We are seeing changes in some of them since we started doing this. One son has returned to the Lord and is preparing for the ministry now. One daughter has acknowledged that she can’t live life without the Lord.
I know that the things they went through will only add to their testimony and help them relate to others so they can minister more effectively. And I believe that those who have been forgiven much love much.
I also believe that all things work together for our good.
So I’m excited to see what the future holds for them, even though some of them are still wandering. I also have some prophetic words to hold onto that were spoken over them in the past. This gives me so much hope.
I trust God to take care of them and to lead them back to Himself. I am anxiously awaiting that day!
In the meantime I’ll just keep loving them and speaking life over them. I’ll do my best and let God take care of the rest.

Book Review: An Ambassador’s Ploy by Thirzah

An Ambassador's Ploy (Adventures in Eldnaire)An Ambassador’s Ploy by Thirzah
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was excited to read this third book in the series because I truly loved the first two. I really enjoy Thirzah’s writing style. She keeps the action going, but also gives her characters time to think and let us in on how they’re feeling. There were some things that were so funny I laughed out loud and others that were so subtle they could have been easily missed. I like humor, so that made it even more enjoyable for me. I think Amelia might be a bit like Thirzah herself. I could easily imagine her doing some of these things given the opportunity. So Amelia feels authentic, like a real person with real feelings. I was afraid that the ending was not going to be what I wanted because of the events that kept going from bad to worse, but it all turned out good in the end. A very satisfying read, I finished it in 2 days, because I had a hard time putting it down.

Thirzah is a homeschool graduate and a successful writer!
